The Center

building411 001The Center for Community Development and Civil Rights at Arizona State University was founded in January 2005 by Raul Yzaguirre to empower people by building bridges between the university and the community as catalysts for transformation.  As a national civil rights leader, Yzaguirre sets the highest standard of excellence and integrity for the Center.  He brings to ASU the expertise and alliances developed over the course of his thirty-year career in representing the U.S. Latino population and other groups that experience poverty and discrimination.

Under Yzaguirre’s leadership, the Center’s work is objective and fact-based utilizing “action” research to have practical implications for community development and civic engagement.  This research drives projects of consequence—projects that have major social impact and replicability—that are models shared regionally, nationally, and internationally.  The goal of university-based, community-connected problem solving is to make communities and societies more prosperous, equitable, and just.

The Center is based on the premise that a great university in addition to teaching and research—has the intellectual resources to solve problems.  In forming strategic alliances with the university and the community, The Center for Community Development and Civil Rights furthers the goal of Arizona State University to become a New American University embedded in the community.
