Focus Groups
The Center is committed to speaking with those who are serviced by the educational system. The focus groups are the mechanism that will enable the Center to dialog with students, parents/guardians, teachers, and CBOs working in the programs identified during the best practices review.
The focus groups represent a “grass roots” compliment to the best practices review and symposium—the focus groups will give voice to the individuals in the educational pipeline.
In selecting students, the Center will seek out those who have exited the educational pipeline early, those who graduated, and parents and teachers, as they are the most immediate presence in the lives of their children and students. These groups possess intimate understandings of the social and cultural pressures that promote graduation or dropping out.
Finally, CBOs involved in prevention programs are important participants because they are the individuals who possess the knowledge of how to turn the stated goals of dropout prevention into successful interventions.
Again, the focus group process is driven by a holistic understanding of dropout prevention—the Center understands the need for multiple voices and understandings to create positive change in our communities.
